COTTON GRASS THEATR
THE UNKNOWN LAND
The play is inspired by true accounts of
nineteenth century Arctic exploration, Inuit mythology and the fatal
attraction of the polar regions.
The year is 1844. Samuel Straw is the last survivor of an expedition
to find the Northwest Passage. We learn why he answered a newspaper
advertisement inviting him to join a ship bound for the unknown
wastes north of Greenland; how the loneliness, the strength-sapping
treks across the ice and the merciless cold change him forever and
how the certainties of his early life are challenged as he faces
that bleak environment. Samuel’s story is told by one actor and a
musician playing the traditional songs of land and sea.
The show won a ‘Best Actor’ nomination at the Buxton
Festival last summer. “A skilful performance from David
Frederickson playing the role of Samuel from boy to man and also
everyone he encounters. Folk-singer Keith Kendrick is on stage
throughout, playing the concertina and lending his resonant voice to
songs which catch and enhance the mood.” (Steve Walker, Buxton
Fringe review).

MARK GWYNNE JONES and the PSYCHICBREAD

what they seem.’ The
