COTTON GRASS THEATR

THE UNKNOWN LAND

The play is inspired by true accounts of nineteenth century Arctic exploration, Inuit mythology and the fatal attraction of the polar regions.

The year is 1844. Samuel Straw is the last survivor of an expedition to find the Northwest Passage. We learn why he answered a newspaper advertisement inviting him to join a ship bound for the unknown wastes north of Greenland; how the loneliness, the strength-sapping treks across the ice and the merciless cold change him forever and how the certainties of his early life are challenged as he faces that bleak environment. Samuel’s story is told by one actor and a musician playing the traditional songs of land and sea.

The show won a ‘Best Actor’ nomination at the Buxton Festival last summer. “A skilful performance from David Frederickson playing the role of Samuel from boy to man and also everyone he encounters. Folk-singer Keith Kendrick is on stage throughout, playing the concertina and lending his resonant voice to songs which catch and enhance the mood.” (Steve Walker, Buxton Fringe review).

MARK GWYNNE JONES and the PSYCHICBREAD

with Paul Lyalls

Four times fringe award winners, Mark Gwynne Jones and the Psychicbread use poetry, music and tragic comedy as their messenger. From the girl who spent too long on a sunbed to the joys of driving a Sherman Tank at rush hour… their sound is contagious, gritty and sometimes startlingly sensitive.

Mark and the Psychicbread will be joined by the fabulous Paul Lyalls with his new collection 'Catching the Cascade'.

‘Astonishing…you’ll love this show!”  The Daily Mail

‘Inspired…one of the most accomplished performance poets in the land…drawing the audience into a world where things are not quite what they seem.’  The Guardian

“In the light of this” is their new CD taking listeners on a musical and poetic tour de force. Recently featured by Verity Sharp on Radio 3, Jones and the Psychicbread have played on radio stations from California to Sydney, Australia.

‘Shakespeare wouldn’t approve, he’d just be jealous.’  Mixmag

‘Gwynne Jones should be ruined with fame and money before he shows the rest of us up for the bunch of sissies we are. But if you don’t want the truth don’t call a poet. At least not a real one. The Independent
